Lauren Deming's Runner Caps Rochester Comeback vs. CWRU

Freshman Lauren Deming hit a runner in the lane with 3.8 seconds remaining to give the University of Rochester a 55-54 victory over Case Western Reserve University at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Sunday afternoon.
 
After a timeout, Case rushed the ball upcourt but the final horn sounded before Brooke Orcutt could get a shot off.
 
Al Leslie led Rochester (10-6, 2-3 University Athletic Association) with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Leslie made 10 of 11 free throw attempts. Ally Zywicki had 10 points. Deming finished with seven.
 
Laura Mummey scored a game-high 20 points for Case. She grabbed nine rebounds and made three steals. Berit Eppard had 14 points. Case is 7-9 overall, 1-4 UAA.
 
Deming's heroics capped Rochester second comeback of the game. The Yellowjackets ended the game on an 8-0 run in the last two minutes to pull out the victory. Earlier in the half, Rochester trailed by 17 points (44-27 with 15:42 left). The Yellowjackets scored 16 straight and drew within 50-43 on Kelsey Hurley's bank shot with 6:52 left. Zywicki hit two three-point goals in the 16-0 run.
 
Four players scored baskets in an 8-0 Spartan run late in the first half that put Case ahead, 26-17, with 5:46 left. Rochester drew within 26-22, but Mummey made two layups around a followup shot by Orcott to put Case ahead, 32-22. Rachel Beaty's follow just before the buzzer put Case ahead, 34-25, at the break.
 
Leslie opened the second half with a jumper in the lane for Rochester before Case scored 10 straight – the last eight by Mummey – to build the lead to 44-27.
 
Case went cold and Rochester held the Spartans scoreless for nearly 10 minutes. After the Yellowjackets pulled within 44-43, Jessica McCoy of Case sank two 3-pointers from right wing in the span of 51 seconds. McCoy's second trey put Case up, 50-43 with 4:55 left.
 
Mummey kept the lead at seven. After two Leslie free throws, Mummey hit a follow shot. Deming scored on a fast break layup, but Mummey answered, banking in a shot one step behind the foul line. That gave CWRU a 54-47 lead with 2:14 to play.
 
Leslie made two free throws. Then Zywicki stole the ball and drove for a layup. Leslie made two more free throws, cutting the deficit to 54-53. Case missed a shot on its possession, but got the rebound. The ball went out of bounds with 25.1 seconds left, turning it over to Rochester. The Yellowjackets called one timeout, then their final one with 11.2 seconds left. Deming got the ball, cut to the left side of the key, then drove the lane and put up the gamewinning runner with 3.8 seconds left.
 
Rochester hit 33.3% from the field for the game (18-54) and 33.3% outside the arc (8-24). Case shot 43.6% in the first half (17-39) but 28.1% in the second half (9-32).
 
With Orcutt grabbing 10 boards, Mummey nine, and Kara Hageman eight, the Spartans held a 42-41 rebound advantage. They outscored Rochester 10-1 on second chance points and held a 30-14 advantage on points in the paint.
 
For Rochester, Kelsey Hurley had five rebounds and Deming grabbed four. Leslie had four assists, three blocks, and made three steals. The Yellowjackets outscored Case, 11-10, off turnovers.
