Balanced Scoring Leads Rochester Past Emory

Lauren Deming made back to back layups in the closing minutes and Rochester hit nine of 11 free throws in the last 65 seconds to wrap up a 74-64 victory over Emory University on Saturday afternoon.

It was a balanced attack for the Yellowjackets with four players scoring 12 or more points. Al Leslie led the way with 19 points and 11 rebounds – her 10th double-double this season. Ally Zywicki had 13 points and seven assists. Deming scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds. Kelsey Hurley had 12 points. Rochester finished the season at 15-10 overall, 7-7 in the University Athletic Association (fourth place).
 
Emory was led by Khadijah Sayyid with 21 points and six rebounds. Shellie Kaniut scored 19 points and grabbed eight boards. Fran Sweeney had 11 points for the Eagles and hit three 3-point field goals. Emory finished 12-13 overall, 4-10 in the UAA.

The Eagles tied the score for the last time at 58-all on a 3-pointer by Sweeney with 7:31 to play. Hurley and Deming scored layups for Rochester, but Emory stayed close, getting a layup from Sarah Arington and one of two from the foul line by Lauren Weems. It was 62-61 Rochester with 2:48 to play.
 
Deming made two layups in less than a minute to push Rochester in front by five, 66-61, with 1:28 to play. Sarah Kaminsky was 2-2 at the line for Rochester. Blair Landolfi hit one of two, Zywicki made three of four, and Leslie closed it out with two free throws with 11 seconds left.
 
Zywicki scored five points in the last 40 seconds of the first half – two free throws followed by a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer – to give Rochester a 35-27 lead at intermission.
 
Emory, which shot 27% from the floor in the first half (11-41) found its shooting touch in the first part of the second half.  The Eagles gnawed the deficit to four points, then finally tied it on a Sweeney 3-pointer from the wing with 13:16 left (47-47).  Kaminsky answered with a trey for Rochester, but Kaniut hit a jumper in the paint and Sweeney connected with a trey from the right corner, pushing Emory in front, 52-50, at 11:06.
 
Rochester scored five straight – Leslie in the paint, one free throw from Hurley, then a layup from Hurley – to make it 55-52. Kaniut's 3-pointer tied it at 55-55. Zywicki sank a trey just before Sweeney's last 3-pointer got the Eagles even at 58-all and set up the frantic last seven minutes.
 
The Yellowjackets shot a season's best 51% from the floor (27-53). They hit 4-14 outside the arc and 16 of 24 free throws. Emory was 25 of 84 from the floor (30%), 8-27 beyond the arc (30%), and six of 10 from the line (60%).
 
Rochester held a 48-38 advantage on the glass. The Yellowjackets committed 24 turnovers which led to 12 Emory points.  Rochester scored 13 points off 11 Emory giveaways.
