Tartans Return to Action with 79-39 Win at Westminster

The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team didn't have to shake off much rust as it shot 47.6% from the field in a 79-39 road victory against Westminster College on Tuesday, December 29. The Tartans, now 9-0 for the season, held a shooting percentage of .493 prior to their 20-day layoff.

Three players scored in double figures for the Tartans, who pressured the Titans (0-9) into 18 turnovers and their worst performance from the field with a 21.2% shooting effort. Junior Jackie Hudepohl (Saratoga, Calif./Lynbrook (Colgate)) led the trio with 24 points while junior Lisa Murphy (McLean, Va./McLean) tallied 23 and senior Lindsay Poss (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) scored 12.

Hudepohl got off to a hot start, making 3-of-5 in the first quarter, as the Tartans led 17-10. The junior guard continued her shooting spree in the second quarter, making all four of her shots from the field, including two more from behind the arc.

The Tartans led by 18 points at halftime and extended their advantage to 25 by the start of the fourth quarter. Poss scored seven of her 12 points in the third period as she connected on all three of her shot attempts while Murphy recorded eight points in five minutes of action. The Tartans also recorded five of their season-high 12 blocks in the third period.

The defense closed the game out, as Westminster shot 3-of-15 in the final 10 minutes.

Murphy led the Tartans on the glass with nine rebounds while Hudepohl blocked four shots and Murphy and sophomore Anna Novak (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) rejected three shots apiece.

While the Tartans scored 79 points, the team recorded 22 assists on 30 made baskets. Poss led the way with six assists while Novak and freshman Jenn Mayberger (Chesterfield, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) each tallied four.
