Laura Mummey and Jessica McCoy Lead Spartans to 51-42 Victory Over Wittenberg

Senior forward Laura Mummey and junior guard Jessica McCoy led the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team to a 51-42 victory over Wittenberg University on Saturday evening in the Pam Evans Smith Arena. 

With the win, the Spartans improve to 3-5 on the season, while the Tigers dropped to 2-3 overall.

Mummey paced the Spartans with 13 points. McCoy turned in 12 points, nine rebounds and a team-high four assists. Off the bench, freshman Alexis Amburgey tallied nine points, seven rebounds and a steal. With a matching nine points, sophomore forward Kara Hageman also contributed six rebounds and three assists to the Spartans tally.

The Tigers were first on the scoreboard and carried their largest lead of seven points at 13-6 with 3:16 left to play in the first quarter. The Spartans then went on a 6-0 run that closed the first quarter and opened the second, with two layups from Hageman and a layup from junior guard Alex Roth. CWRU took a 20-16 lead with 2:42 left to play in the half as Amburgey sunk back-to-back three-pointers. The Spartans would end the half with an 8-3 run to spread their lead to seven points, 28-21.

After the half, CWRU held the momentum and kept the lead for the remainder of the game. The Spartans largest lead of 14 points came in the fourth quarter with 6:41 left on the clock as Mummey scored seven points in-a-row to put CWRU up 45-31.

Becca Ziska led the Tigers with 14 points and four rebounds.
