Emory Upends No. 14 NYU

From Emory University Athletics

Sophomore Dumebi Egbuna and junior Michelle Bevan combined for 30 points in leading the Emory women's basketball team to a Friday night win over New York University. The Eagles won for the second time in three games and raised their overall record to 12-9, 3-7 in the University Athletic Association, following a 65-59 triumph over the No. 14 Violets who slipped to 17-4 overall, 6-4 in the league.

Egbuna ended the night hitting five-of-eight field goal attempts and all seven of her free throw opportunities in registering her second straight and seventh double-figure scoring effort of the year. Bevan was successful on six field goals in 13 tries in posting her seventh double-digit performance of the season in 16 contests. In addition, Bevan tied senior teammate Khadijah Sayyid for game honors with eight rebounds. Rounding out the Emory double-figure scorers were Sayyid and Shellie Kaniut, both of whom totaled 10 points.

NYU battled back from a nine-point halftime deficit and outscored the Eagles by a 19-9 count in the third stanza to knot the score at 40-40 heading into the final 10 minutes of action. Emory then regrouped and rattled off a 9-2 run over the opening 3:32 of the quarter, sparked by six straight points by Egbuna, to bolt to a 49-42 advantage. The Violets countered with a 10-2 blitz, the last four points coming from Kaitlin Read, to claim a 52-51 lead with 3:15 on the clock.   Emory then scored the game's next six points, started by a layup from Bevan, to go ahead, 57-52. After the Violets sliced the Emory lead to two points with 1:14 left, Bevan hit a big shot, and then grabbed a rebound when NYU misfired on its next possession.

Bevan was fouled and then made a free throw to increase the Eagles' edge to five points.  Kaniut then iced the outcome when her two charity tosses with 18 ticks on the clock upped Emory's margin to 64-57.

NYU ended the evening shooting 38.6 percent (22 of 57) from the floor compared to Emory's 35.8 percent (19 of 53). The Eagles used some timely foul shooting in earning the win, sinking 21-of-25 from the stripe with their 84.0 percent mark a season high. The win was Emory's eighth

Despite shooting just 27.6 percent from the floor, the Eagles solid performances in free throw shooting and rebounding in claiming a 31-21 edge at halftime. Emory led for all but 28 seconds over the first two quarters and was led in scoring by Sayyid's seven points while Fran Sweeney and Egbuna each chipped in seven points. Emory led by a two-point margin with 6:03 left in the second stanza before going on a 6-0 spurt to push its lead to 24-16 with 4:25 on the clock.  After a bucket by NYU's Liv Lenebarger, Sayyid scored five straight Eagle points, started by a three pointer, to push the lead to 11 points, 29-18. A trey by the Violets' Kaitlin Read cut Emory's to eight, but a pair of charity tosses by Egbuna closed out the scoring for the half. The Eagles converted 11 of 12 from the stripe and posted a 22-16 advantage in rebounding with Michelle Bevan snatching seven boards.
