Strong Second Half Leads Emory Past Chicago

Senior Khadijah Sayyid led four double-figure scorers with a season-high tying 17 points in leading the Emory women's basketball team to a Friday evening home win over the University of Chicago. The Eagles snapped a three-game losing streak and upped their overall record to 11-8, 2-6 in the University Athletic Association following a 71-64 decisions over the Maroons who slipped to 12-7 overall, 4-4 in the league. 

Sayyid ended the game hitting six-of-12 field goal attempts, including a pair of triples in four attempts, in notching her sixth double-figure scoring effort of the campaign.  Junior Shellie Kaniut came off the bench to contribute 14 points, while senior Ilene Tsao and junior Fran Sweeney rounded out Emory's double-digit scorers with 11 points apiece.

After a pair of free throws by UC's Katie Anderson put the Maroons up by a 56-55 margin with 3:51 remaining in the game, the Eagles responded with a key 9-0 blitz, the first five coming from Kaniut followed by a four-point play by Kaniut, to bolt to a 64-56 advantage with 2:15 on the clock.  The Maroons batted back to within four points, but a free throw by Tsao followed by a pair of makes at the stripe by Sweeney pushed Emory's lead back to seven points, 69-62, with just 23 ticks on the clock.

Emory connected on 46.9 percent from the floor (23 of 49), including 50 percent (5 of 10) from three-point range.  UC ended the evening connecting on 42.9 percent (24 of 56) from the field, and was successful on just 29.4 percent (5 of 17) from distance.  Free throw shooting played a role in the outcome, with the Eagles sinking a season-high 20 in 27 attempts from the line compared to the Maroons' effort of 11 of 17.  Emory enjoyed a 35-26 bulge on the glass with Sayyid leading the squad with eight boards.  

Chicago shot 48.3 percent (14 of 29) from the floor over the opening two quarters in laying a claim to a 34-28 lead at the break.  The Eagles outpointed UC by a 17-13 margin in the third stanza, with Sweeney totaling five points. UC led, 49-45, early in the fourth, but eight straight Eagle points, the first four by Tsao, pushed Emory into the lead at 53-49 with 6:53 left in the game.
