Strong Second Half Powers NYU Past Emmanuel

Strong Second Half Powers NYU Past Emmanuel

From NYU Athletics

The New York University women's basketball team overcame a first-half deficit in order to defeat Emmanuel College 59-54 on Saturday afternoon, December 5, in Boston, MA.

The Violets (7-0), who entered the contest ranked #5 and #6 in the most recent D3hoops.com and USA Today Top-25 Polls, respectively, trailed 30-27 following the game's first two quarters, but mounted a comeback in the second half en route to the victory over the Saints (5-4).

Three NYU players scored in double figures on the afternoon, led by Megan Dawe's team-high 14 points. Overall, both squads were virtually even in every aspect of the contest. Where the Violets held the advantage, and ultimately won the game, was at the foul line. NYU was 15-of-22 from the charity stripe compared to just 4-of-7 for Emmanuel.

"We made some defensive adjustments at the half, which gave our kids some confidence," said NYU Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "At the start of the second half, we were able to get the ball inside, especially down the stretch and were able to stay composed in a hostile environment. We hit those free-throws at the end to get the win."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Dawe added five rebounds and was 4-of-5 from the line against the Saints.

Kaitlyn Read was the Violets' second-leading scorer with 13 points and was 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. The junior guard also led NYU in rebounds (8) and steals (5) and added two assists.

Amy Harioka chipped in 12 points and also pulled down a career-best seven rebounds. The junior guard made two three-pointers and added three helpers.

"As a team, it wasn't our prettiest game, but it was a really good test for us to go on the road against a team that can certainly be in the tournament come March," continued Hall-Gregory. "We were up to the occasion."
