From University of Chicago Athletics

All five starters scored in double digits, propelling the University of Chicago women's basketball team over Emory University in the second half of Friday night's 79-73 win in Hyde Park.

With the win, the Maroons improved to 11-6 (3-3 in the University Athletic Association) on the year. The Eagles' dropped to 10-7 (1-5 UAA). The game was a story of two halves with Emory leading for a 15-minute period in the first half, and the Maroons holding onto the lead for most of the second half.

Balanced scoring was key for UChicago. Junior guard Stephanie Anderson (16 points), junior forward Britta Nordstrom (14 points), sophomore guard Elizabeth Nye (13 points), senior guard Caitlin Moore (13 points) and freshman guard Jamie Kockenmeister(11 points) all registered double digits in that category. In addition, freshman forwards Olariche Obi added 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench for the home team. Kockenmeister also established a new career-best in points scored.

Friday's conference matchup began with the Maroons jumping out to a 6-4 lead behind six-straight points in the opening two minutes from Kockenmeister. Moore followed up with eight points in-a-row for UChicago, which included a pair of threes. But Emory made its move with an 11-2 run and led for the rest of the first half.

The Eagles went after the Maroons aggressively one-on-one. Their quick guards frequently knifed into the lane past their defenders and finished consistently even on difficult shots. Emory shot 53 percent in the first half and led 36-33 at the break.

UChicago picked up momentum and made five of its opening seven shots to capture the lead at 46-42, capped by a layup and free throw from Anderson. The Maroons held onto their advantage for the final 18:25 of the game, narrowly outplaying the visitors down the stretch as they hit important free throws. Anderson was a rock at the charity stripe, hitting all nine of her attempts.

Emory got within three points on several occasions in the final minutes and started to foul to get more possessions. However, UChicago hit 7 of 8 free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Overall, the Maroons shot 45 percent from the field and the Eagles hit half of their shots. UChicago impressed from the free throw line at 78 percent (25-32) while Emory made 57 percent (12-21).

The Eagles edged the Maroons on the glass 37-31; however, the home team maintained its active defensive chops with 19 forced turnovers. They also made the extra pass frequently, resulting in 17 assists compared to eight by Emory.
