3-Point Shooting Key In Yellowjackets' UAA Win Over Emory

From University of Rochester Athletics

The University of Rochester women's basketball team sank 11 3-pointers and held off an Emory University rally to top the host Eagles 75-68 in the University Athletic Association opener for both teams on Saturday at the Woodruff PE Center.

Rochester, ranked #12 in the latest D3hoops.com poll, wins its sixth straight and is now 11-1 overall and 1-0 in the league.  Emory, who is among others receiving votes in the latest poll, drops its first game at home this season and is now 9-3 overall and 0-1 in the UAA.

The Yellowjackets were led by three players with 17 points in the contest.  Senior Kayla Kibling scored 17, all in the second half, including going 5-10 from outside the arc.  Junior Sarah Kaminsky sank 4-of-8 treys while sophomore Alexandra Leslie had her seventh double-double of the season with 17 points and 14 rebounds on the day.  Junior Brynn Lauer returned to the lineup on Saturday and chipped in nine points and four assists while senior Tylar Guerrieri added six points and seven rebounds off the bench.

Leading the way for Emory was Michelle Bevan who scored 18 points and added eight rebounds.  Ilene Tsao scored 14 points with 8 rebounds and 8 assists and Khadijah Sayyid added nine points for the Eagles who made just two 3-pointers on the day.

After heading into halftime with a slim two point lead, 31-29, the Yellowjackets made a strong push in the third quarter, building up a 13-point margin after a Kelsey Hurley jumper with 3:34 to go in the quarter.  The lead was built behind the strength of an 11-2 over two and a half minutes.

The Eagles responded with strong defense in the fourth quarter, forcing eight Yellowjacket turnovers, leading directly to nine points in the period to make a game of it.   With 6:05 remaining, Leslie sank 1-of-2 free throws to keep UR ahead by 10 points.  But over the next four minutes, Emory scored nine straight points to trim the lead to just one, at 67-66 with 2:03 to play.

Kibling would answer for UR, with a big three with 1:40 on the clock, and that was followed by Lauer and Leslie combining to make 5-6 at the charity stripe over the final 45 seconds to seal the win.

The 11 3-pointers by the Yellowjackets are a season high and the 4th most in a single game in school history, with the last time UR made that many coming twice in the 2012-13 season.  The 47.8% (11-23) percentage is also the 4th best in a single game for a UR squad, with at least 10 three's made.
