Fundamentals Help Yellowjackets Top Emory for 20th Win

The University of Rochester took advantage of the sometimes-overlooked factors of the game – scoring off turnovers and second chance points – to post a 66-49 victory over Emory University at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Saturday afternoon.
 
It was the regular-season finale for each team. Rochester improved to 20-5 overall, 10-4 in the University Athletic Association. The Yellowjackets finished one game behind Washington University (MO) in the league race. Emory ended 13-12 overall, 4-10 in the UAA.
 
Rochester is ranked #14 in the D3hoops.com poll and 16th in the WBCA poll this week.
 
This is the 13th season with 20 or more wins for Rochester, its first such total since 2012-13. Rochester is a strong candidate for a Pool C (at-large) invitation to the NCAA Division III women's basketball playoffs. Twenty such bids are extended in the field of 64 teams. Rochester has been ranked #1 in the East Region each of the three weeks of balloting.
 
It was Senior Day on the River Campus and all four seniors played a role in the win. Kayla Kibling had 13 points, including three three-point goals, in 26 mninutes. Tylar Guerrieri had 12 rebounds and two steals in 20 minutes. Kelsey Hurley scored six points with two assists and one steal in 24 minutes. 18017
 
Lauren Deming led all scorers with 17 points in 23 minutes off the bench. She hit 8 of 13 from the floor, grabbed five rebounds, had three assists, three blocked shots, and three steals. Al Leslie scored nine points with nine rebounds. Cassandra McCambridge had eight points and five rebounds.
 
Ilene Tsao was Emory's only double figure scorer. She had 10 points. Shellie Kaniut scored nine points and made three of Emory's 10 steals.
 
Deming scored six points in an 11-5 run that closed the first quarter and gave Rochester a 15-9 lead through one. She and Leslie scored four points apiece in an 11-2 run that opened a 30-17 lead late in the second quarter.
 
Rochester scored 17 first-half points off 15 Emory turnovers. For the game, the Yellowjackets scored 24 points after giveaways. Emory scored 18 points from 20 Rochester miscues. Rochester had 17 offensive rebounds and produced 15 points.
