Big Third Quarter Carries Rochester Past Nazareth

Rochester used a 15-5 surge in the third quarter to build a 17-point lead enroute to a 57-43 victory over Nazareth College in the quarterfinals of the Wendy's College Classic at Robert Kidera Gymnasium.
 
Al Leslie led the Yellowjackets with 22 points and 10 rebounds. It was her third double-double of the season, her 13th in her career. The 22 points are a season's high. Four other players scored five or more points. Brynn Lauer had eight points, Kayla Kibling and Tylar Guerrieri had six, and Mary Kronenwetter scored five.
 
Rochester, ranked 18th in the D3hoops.com poll this week and 19th in the USA Today/WBCA poll, improved to 5-0. Nazareth is 4-1.

Lindsey Kelly led the Golden Flyers with 12 points. Sam Sorge had 11 points. Julia Brew had 11 rebounds for Nazareth and three assists. Samantha Peebles recorded seven steals and Kelly had four.
 
Rochester held a commanding 50-36 edge on the glass, 28-14 in the second half. Kronenwetter and Guerrieri had seven boards apiece. Lauren Deming and Lauer had six. Deming blocked five shots.
 
Leslie scored seven of Rochester's first nine points in the third quarter, a conventional three-point play and then four straight free throws. The surge ended on an eight footer off the right baseline by Kibling. It gave Rochester a 38-21 lead with just under five minutes left in the quarter.
 
With the clock ticking below four minutes in the fourth quarter, Nazareth made its first serious challenge since just before halftime. The Golden Flyers used an 8-2 run – a three-pointer from Brew, two buckets in the lane from Sorge, and one free throw by Peebles to creep within 48-41 with 3:36 left.
 
Leslie hit a short turnaround off the right post but Peck drove for a scoop shot to keep it at seven, 50-43. Guerrieri made two free throws, Deming scored off the left block, and Kibling sank a trey from the left of the key.
 
With the victory, Rochester moves into the Palestra for Thursday's semifinals. The third-seeded Yellowjackets will play second-seeded Geneseo at 8 pm.
