Judges Extinguish Beacons, 79-54, With Big Second Quarter

The Brandeis University women's basketball team outscored visiting UMass Boston, 27-6, in the second quarter tonight as the Judges defeated the Beacons, 79-54, in their final non-conference game of the regular season. With the win the Judges enter University Athletic Association play with an 8-3 record, while the Beacons slip under .500 to 5-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Brandeis raced out to a 14-2 lead just over five minutes into the contest when junior transfer Eva Hart (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan)buried a 3-pointer.
  • UMass Boston answered by scoring 10 of the final 11 points of the period to cut the lead to 15-12 after one.
  • The Judges did not allow the visitors the same luxury in the second, holding them scoreless for the first 7:33 as they scored 22 unanswered points to go ahead 37-12.
  • The Beacons did answer with all six of their points in a row, but the Judges scored the last five to take a 42-18 lead at the break.
  • The Judges led by as many as 31 in the third period and converted a traditional three-point play early in the fourth to establish a 64-30 lead, their largest of the game.
  • UMB went on to outscore Brandeis, 24-18, in the fourth to close within the final 25-point margin of victory.

FOR BRANDEIS

  • Fourteen of the 17 active players on the Brandeis roster scored points tonight.
  • Senior Maria Jackson (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton, N.Y.)  recorded her first double-double of the season and fifth of her career with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. It was her third double digit rebounding performance of the season.
  • Jackson also led the Judges with three assists.
  • Classmate Paris Hodges (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) added 12 points, five boards and a game-high five steals.
  • Rookie Lauren Rubinstein (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) led the Brandeis reserves with a career-high 11 points, hitting 3-for-3 from the field with a 3-pointer, and 4-of-6 from the line.  

FOR UMASS BOSTON

  • Beacon senior Chantel Jordan (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) led all players with 17 points off the bench.
  • Jordan scored 14 of her 17 in the fourth quarter, when she hit 4-of-5 from the field with a 3-pointer, and 5-of-6 from the line.
  • Junior forward Raven Kelsey (Boston, Mass./John D. O'Bryant) nearly had a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds to match Jackson for game-high honors on the glass.
  • Senior Taje Burston (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central) and junior Katie Mathieu (Coventry, Conn./East Catholic) each had three assists.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • The Judges held UMB to 29.3% from the field (17-58) thanks a 16.7% (2-12) performance in the second quarter.
  • Brandeis held a 50-45 edge in rebounding and forced 25 Beacon turnovers, converting them into 21 points.
  • Brandeis evened their all-time record with UMass Boston to 3-3.
