Tartans Advance to ECAC Semifinal with 84-59 Win

The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team shot 49.2% to top Brooklyn College, 84-59, in its first game of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's Basketball Championship presented by Visit Myrtle Beach on Friday, March 3. The Tartans are serving as host and advance to the semifinals and now have a season record of 19-7.

Senior Lisa Murphy (McLean, Va./McLean) led the Tartans with 24 points and 16 rebounds while freshman Katharine Higgins (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) dropped in 20 points and grabbed seven boards. Senior Jackie Hudepohl (Saratoga, Calif./Lynbrook (Colgate)) also scored in double figures with 14 points while freshman Makayla Filiere (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) dished out five assists to go with eight points.

Brooklyn held a 7-5 lead before the Tartans went on a 13-0 run, behind eight points from Murphy, to lead 18-7 with 1:41 to play in the first quarter. The quarter ended with the Tartans ahead 23-11.

Murphy put in 12 more points in the second period and finished the half with 20 points and 11 rebounds, as the Tartans led 42-28 at the break.

The Tartans pushed the lead to 26 points at the end of the third quarter by using a 15-2 run over the course of five minutes. Higgins scored the first five points while freshman Dominique Petach (Pittsburgh, Pa./Norwin) and Hudepohl scored four points during the run.

A three-pointer by Brooklyn's Grace Martinez-Espina with 2:35 to play cut the deficit to 19 but the Tartans finished the final time with three buckets to go on to the 84-59 win.
