Senior Lisa Murphy scored a career-high and UAA single-game record 44 points while becoming the first women's basketball player in University Athletic Association (UAA) history to score 2,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds, as the 13th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team soared past Emory University, 93-73, on Sunday, January 22. The Tartans are now 15-1 overall and 4-1 in UAA play while the Eagles drop to 11-5 and 2-3.
On top of making UAA history, Murphy also became the 18th player in women's NCAA Division III history to reach 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. With her second block of the game she became the 8th player to record 200 blocks on top of the scoring and rebounding mark. Murphy's career day also included her 10th consecutive double-double as she finished with 15 rebounds after making 15-of-16 shots from the field and 14-of-16 from the line.
The Tartans held a 20-17 lead at the close of the first quarter after shooting 58.3% from the field. Their hot shooting didn't cool off as they increased their lead to 49-34 at the half behind a second-quarter shooting performance of 62.5%. Murphy had 20 points at the break on 6-of-7 shooting from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
The third quarter saw much of the same from the Tartans as freshman Katharine Higgins (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) drilled a three-pointer on the opening possession. The Tartans scored on their first five possessions of the quarter and were 7-of-7 from the field before their first missed bucket came with 4:55 showing on the clock. At that point, the Tartans led 66-49.
Three minutes and forty seconds into the final period, the Eagles closed the gap to 10 points, 78-68, on a jumper by Michelle Bevan. A Murphy layup followed a Tartan timeout to stop the 9-3 run by Emory. The Tartans defense then held the Eagles to five points the remainder of the game while the offense scored 13 to propel the home team to its fourth straight UAA win, 93-73.
Joining Murphy in the scoring column with double digits was senior Jackie Hudepohl (Saratoga, Calif./Lynbrook (Colgate)) with 17 and Higgins with 13. Freshman Makayla Filiere (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) dished out a career-best 10 assists.
Emory was led by Shellie Kaniut's 17 points while Erin Lindahl scored 12 points off the bench.
