Washington University in St. Louis head women's basketball coach Nancy Fahey has announced the hiring of Steve Cochran as full-time assistant coach.

Cochran replaces John Patterson, who took a position in IT Recruiting with Adaptive Solutions Group in the the St. Louis area.

He returns to the Danforth Campus for his second stint after spending eight years on Fahey's staff from 1998-2006. Cochran was part of four-straight NCAA Division III National Championship teams from 1998-2001, and the Bears also won eight University Athletic Association (UAA) titles and posted a 211-17 (.925) record.

In 2002-03, Cochran was awarded the AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year, the highest honor an assistant coach can earn.

"I am excited to have Steve back on staff. His familiarity with WashU academically and athletically is a big plus for our program." said Fahey.  "He is an outstanding and proven recruiter. On the court, he is energetic, passionate and knowledgeable. We are glad that Coach Cochran is again a BEAR."

Cochran arrives on the Danforth Campus after serving as interim head coach at NCAA Division II Maryville University this past summer. He spent three seasons on the staff during his third tenure at Maryville. He compiled a 20-28 (.416) overall record while guiding the Tornados, and was voted the American Southwest Conference West Division Co-Coach of the Year after the 2009-10 season.

In 2007-08, Cochran served as the head women's basketball coach at Rockford (Ill.) College for one season. In his one year with the Regents, he nearly doubled the team's victory total with a 15-10 overall record and guided the team to the quarterfinals of the NAC conference tournament.

Cochran spent his early coaching career in the St. Louis high school ranks and served as an assistant coach at Incarnate Word Academy and Parkway South High School. At IWA, he helped the team to a five-year record of 133-13 including three state semifinal appearances and the 1995 Missouri State Championship.

In his three seasons at Parkway South, Cochran helped the Patriots post a 72-12 record and a pair of Elite Eight appearances. He began his collegiate head coaching career at Saint Louis University in a position that was part time with the Billikens.
