Emory Upends Agnes Scott

Emory Upends Agnes Scott

From Emory University Athletics

Freshman Allison Chernow came off the bench and recorded her first career double-double in sparking the Emory women's basketball team to a Monday evening home win over Agnes Scott College. The Eagles won their fourth home game in as many outings and boosted their overall record to 7-1 following a 77-45 triumph over the Scotties who slipped to 1-3.

Chernow wound up the contest with a team-high 13 points, hitting five-of-eight field goals, including three three-pointer in four opportunities, while topping the club with 10 boards. Senior Fran Sweeney and sophomore Ashley Oldshue each contributed 11 points to the cause, with Sweeney knocking down three triples, her sixth multi-trey performance of the campaign, and Oldshue snatching nine boards. All 11 players who saw action for Emory found their way into the scoring column.

Emory was successful on 48.6 percent (34 of 70) from the field, its third-highest mark of the season, and held ASC 30.4 percent (17 of 56), the second-lowest opponent effort of the campaign.  The Eagles drained 50 percent (7 of 14) from beyond the arc and finished with a 44-34 edge in rebounding.  Emory's bench played a key role in the victory, with the reserves outpointing the ASC subs by a 36-9 count.

After the teams battled to a 17-17 draw after the first quarter, the Eagles exploded for a 23-7 scoring advantage in the second stanza, hitting 10-of-19 field goal attempts compared to the Scotties' effort of two-of-12 from the floor. After a bucket by Garis Grant gave ASC a 21-19 lead, the Eagles held the visitors scoreless over a five-minute stretch while scoring 15 straight points to take command of the command of the contest, 34-21, with 3:36 on the clock. Chernow scored six of her nine first-half points in that run on the strength of a pair of three pointers while Oldshue accounted for all of her seven first-half points. Back-to-back baskets by senior Michelle Bevan stretched the Eagles' cushion to 15 points with 53 ticks on the clock, with a bucket by freshman Benna Ames in the waning seconds closed out the half with Emory ahead by a 40-24 count.

Emory kept the pressure on during the early stages of the third quarter, scoring seven straight points, capped by a Sweeney trey, to balloon its lead to 47-24. After a Scotties' basket, Sweeney, Oldshue and senior Shellie Kaniut hit buckets to push the home squad to a 53-26 bulge. The Eagles would lead by as many as 32 points on three occasions in the quarter before heading into the final 10 minutes of action with a 67-37 margin.
