Emory Defeats Brandeis, Moves to .500 in UAA Play

From Emory University Athletics

Junior Ashley Oldshue and senior Shellie Kaniut combined for 35 points and the Emory women's basketball team earned a Friday evening win over  Brandeis University. The Eagles raised their overall record to 12-5 (3-3 UAA) following a 61-50 over the Judges who slipped to 10-7, 2-4 in the league.

Oldshue ended the evening sinking seven-of-16 from the floor and five-of-six from the stripe in notching her 14th straight and 16th overall double-digit performance of the campaign. Kaniut converted six field goals in 14 attempts, including a pair of triples, and two free throws en route to her 13th double-digit outing. Freshman Erin Lindahl chipped in eight points, six during a crucial stretch in the fourth quarter.

Emory held a 10-point edge, 46-36, with 8:56 left in the contest before a 9-0 blitz by the Judges drew them to within one point with 6:34 remaining. A free throw by freshman Lindsey Tse followed by a basket by Lindahl stretched Emory to a 49-45 lead, but a bucket by the Judges' Paris Hodges narrowed Emory's advantage to two points. An Oldshue basket off a scramble underneath the basketball, followed by a drive to the rim by Lindahl, gave the Eagles some breathing room, up 53-49, but BU strayed within striking distance when Sydney Sodine hit a bucket with 3:02 on the clock. The Eagles then closed out the final 2:30 on an 8-1 run, started by a Kaniut jumper, to seal the victory.

For the game, Emory hit 36.7 percent (22 of 60) of its field goal tries while holding the Judges to 28.6 percent, the fourth time this year the Eagles held a foe to less than 30 percent from the floor. Emory finished with a 43-40 edge in rebounding.

Behind 12 points from Oldshue, Emory held a 31-25 lead at intermission.  Both teams shot under 40 percent from the field with the Eagles checking in at 36.7 percent (11 of 30) and the Judges at 30 percent (9 of 30). After battling to a 17-17 draw after the opening 10 minutes, Emory scored the first 10 points of the second frame, with Fran Sweeney and Kaniut hitting triples in that stretch to go up, 27-17, with 6:28 left. After a pair of charity tosses by BU's Maria Jackson, buckets by sophomore Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod and Oldshue gave the Eagles their biggest edge of the first half, 31-19, with 4:11 remaining. Brandeis fought back and made the most of eight straight field goal misses by Emory to close out the half on a 6-0 spurt.
