Emory Rallies For Win Over NYU

Emory Rallies For Win Over NYU

From Emory University Athletics

Senior Michelle Bevan chalked up her third double-double of the year and sophomore Ashley Oldshue totaled 20 points in helping the Emory women's basketball team rally for a Sunday afternoon come-from-behind victory over New York University. The Eagles won for the fourth time in the past five games and upped their overall record to 13-5, 4-3 in the University Athletic Association, following a 78-75 decision over the Violets who fell to 10-8 overall, 0-7 in the league.

Bevan led all players with a career-high tying 21 points and her game-high 12 rebounds established a personal best.  She ended the contest hitting 10-of-13 field goal attempts, including a three pointer, in recording her sixth double-figure scoring performance of the season. She scored nine fourth-quarter points, hitting four-of-five from the floor in helping the Eagles outpoint the Violets by a 23-15 margin. In addition, she finished with three blocks, all of which came in the fourth quarter.  Oldshue connected on eight field goals in 11 opportunities and all four from the free throw line in running her double-figure scoring streak to 15 games. It was her fourth effort of 20 or more points this year.

The Eagles trailed by as many as eight points, 63-55, with 8:39 remaining in the final frame before a three pointer by Sweeney cut the gap to five points. A bucket by the Violets' Lauren Brown stretched NYU back to a 65-58 advantage with 7:53 on the clock. Emory began its comeback with 6:05 remaining when Bevan knocked down a three pointer, drawing Emory to within four points.  After NYU reclaimed a six-point edge, another Sweeney trey cut the Violets lead in half with 4:08 on the clock. The Violets still held a four-point cushion with 2:24 left before Bevan personally accounted for all of Emory's points during a 6-1 spurt, hitting three straight field goals including one with 55 ticks on the clock that put Emory ahead for good, at 76-75.

After a Violet turnover, freshman Lindsey Tse hit one of two free throws to put the Eagles up by a two-point margin with 34 seconds left. On its next possession, NYU saw a three-point attempt thwarted by a Bevan block. After Tse came up with a crucial steal and was fouled, she made a free throw that moved the Eagles to a 78-75 advantage with 19 seconds remaining.  Bevan came up with another block when NYU attempted a drive to rim with 10 ticks. The Eagles would then survive a pair of NYU three-point attempts in winning for the seventh time in eight home starts.  Over the final 6:05 of the clash, Emory was successful on eight-of-10 field goal tries.

For the game, Emory connected on 49.2 percent (31 of 63) from the floor, its best mark in conference action and third-best overall effort of the season, while NYU countered with an effort of 46.2 percent (30 of 65). The Violets enjoyed a 38-33 margin in rebounding but turned the ball over on 18 occasions which Emory parlayed into 20 points.

In a fast-paced and offensive-oriented first quarter that saw Emory shoot 71.4 percent (10 of 14) from the floor and NYU 58.8 percent (10 of 17), Emory held a 27-25 lead. The Eagles led by as many as seven points and maintained a five-point advantage with 5:27 left in the second quarter, but NYU closed with a flurry, outscoring the Eagles by a 12-2 count over the remainder of the stanza to take a 44-39 lead into the break.
