Sophomore Ashley Oldshue and freshman Lindsey Tse combined for 36 points in helping the Emory women's basketball team to a season-opening win over Oglethorpe University. The Eagles posted a 71-66 decision over the Stormy Petrels that raised the program's all-time record to 20-9 in season-opening contests.
Oldshue finished with 17 points (second-highest career total) and a career-high 16 rebounds, while also registering four blocked shots. Her rebound total tied the school's 12th-highest individual game mark and represented her first career double-double. Tse, playing in her first collegiate game, paced all scorers with 19 points, 12 coming in the second half, hitting six-of-11 from the floor and seven-of-eight from the stripe, while registering six rebounds and six assists. Senior Fran Sweeney knocked down three three-point field goals in seven attempts en route to a nine-point evening while freshman Erin Lindahl closed out the night second on the club with eight boards.
Oglethorpe finished with a slight edge in field goal shooting, sinking 35.5 percent (27-of-76) of its opportunities compared to Emory's 33.8 percent (25-of-74). The Eagles did maintain a 54-45 edge on the glass and were effective from the foul line, converting 16 of 19.
Tied 34-34 early in the third quarter a bucket by Tse capped an 11-6 Emory spurt that gave Emory a 45-39 edge. After Oglethorpe crept to within three, Emory used some timely free shooting, sinking all six of its tries during a 6-1 run that stretched its lead to eight points, 55-47, with 45 ticks on the clock. The Eagles would hold a 57-52 advantage after the third stanza.
A basket by freshman Allison Chernow staked Emory to a 61-52 early in the final stanza, and a jumper by senior Shellie Kaniut kept the Eagles ahead by a nine-point margin with 5:44 left on the clock. After a three-pointer by the Petrels' Bailey Charles sliced Emory's lead to four points, back-to-back baskets by Oldshue pushed Emory to a 69-61 cushion with 3:28 remaining. The Eagles then hit a cold stretch missing their next six shots that helped Oglethorpe draw to within a 69-66 count with 1:07 on the clock. After an Emory misfire, OU had a chance to cut further into the Emory lead but a missed shot by Lauren Ransom led to a pair of free throws by Tse with five seconds left that closed out the game's scoring.
