From Emory University Athletics

Senior Shellie Kaniut and sophomore Ashley Oldshue each scored a team-high 16 points in leading the Emory women's basketball squad to a Tuesday evening win at home over Sewanee. The Eagles boosted their record to 6-0 following a 64-49 decision over the Tigers who slipped to 2-4.

Kaniut, who also dished out a team-high tying four assists and chipped in a game-best four steals, ended the evening sinking eight-of-20 from the floor en route to her fifth double-figure scoring performance of the year. Oldshue closed out the night five-of-eight from the field and was successful on six free throws in seven tries in notching her fifth double-digit effort of the season. Sophomore Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod was next up on the club's score sheet, coming off the bench to register eight points.  Freshman Erin Lindahltied for game honors with seven rebounds.

The Eagles connected on 42.6 percent (26 of 61) of their field goal tries compared to Sewanee's mark of 39.3 percent, the fifth straight game they enjoyed an edge in that category. Emory was more efficient from three-point range, hitting four of 11 from distance while the Tigers launched 21 attempts and made four. Emory held a 40-30 margin in rebounding.

The Eagles jumped on the Tigers in the first quarter, shooting 55.6 percent (10 of 18) from the floor, including three-of-five from distance, in claiming a 24-11 advantage. Freshman Allison Chernow and Kaniut each scored six points in the stanza, with Chernow knocking down a pair of triples and Kaniut converting three field goals in five opportunities. With Kaniut hitting a pair of buckets and senior Michelle Bevan adding a layup, Emory opened the second quarter on a 6-0 spurt that gave it the first of two 19-point leads.

After a pair of charity tosses by Oldshue provided the Eagles a 34-18 advantage with 6:39 on the clock, the Tigers responded with a 9-2 charge, cutting Emory's lead to nine points, 36-27, with 1:42 on the clock. A three pointer by senior Fran Sweeney 12 seconds later pushed the Eagles to a 12-point cushion and closed out the scoring for the half. Oldshue paced the Emory scoring attack with nine points while Kaniut added eight.

Emory maintained a double-figure advantage over the final two quarters in earning the win. The Tigers got to within 10 points with 2:44 left in the third frame, but were held scoreless for the remainder of the period, as the Eagles scored six unanswered points, the first four on a pair of baskets by Oldshue, followed by a jumper by Kaniut with two ticks on the clock, to take a 52-36 cushion into the final 10 minutes of play. Emory led by as many as 18 points in the final stanza, the final time coming with 5:35 left following a layup by Kaniut.
