Eagles Rally For Win Over Chicago

Eagles Rally For Win Over Chicago

From Emory University Athletics

Junior Ashley Oldshue's two free throws with 30 seconds left in the game gave the Emory women's basketball team the deciding points in a come-from-behind Sunday afternoon win at home over the University of Chicago. The Eagles improved their overall record to 10-4, 1-2 in the University Athletic Association with a 74-71 decision over the Maroons who slipped to 9-5 in overall outings, 2-1 in the conference.

Senior Shellie Kaniut led all players with 20 points, sinking 10-of-21 field goal attempts in chalking up her 10th double-digit effort of the campaign and third of 20 or more points. Oldshue came up with her third double-double of the season, picking up 19 points and snatching 10 rebounds.  Oldshue was successful on six-of-10 field goals and knocked down seven free throws in nine attempts. She scored eight of the team's final nine points over the final 2:47 of the game.  Senior Michelle Bevan posted her first double-double of the year, leading all players with a career-high tying 11 rebounds while adding 12 points, 10 coming in the third frame that helped keep Emory in the game.

After holding a one-point lead at the intermission, the Maroons outpointed Emory by a 24-19 count in the third quarter to take a 58-52 advantage into the final 10 minutes of play. A 6-1 Eagle run to open the stanza, which saw Kaniut and sophomore Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod hit buckets and freshman Allison Chernow convert a pair from the stripe, drew them to within a single digit, but UC countered with a 12-5 spurt, finished off by a bucket by Britta Nordstrom, to claim a 71-63 cushion with 3:37 remaining. However, those would be the final points that UC would score for the remainder of the contest as the Eagles accounted for the game's final 11 points in raising their home record to 5-1. The Maroons missed both their final four field goal and free throw attempts and suffered two turnovers with Emory making the most of its opportunities down the stretch.

A basket by Fran Sweeney, followed by two charity tosses by Oldshue cut the deficit to four points with 2:47 on the clock. Neither team scored again until with 1:11 remaining when a bucket by Oldshue moved the Eagles to within two points.  After a missed three-point try by Chicago, freshman Erin Lindhal made the first of two free throws. After missing on her second try, Oldshue got the rebound and was fouled. She then went to the line with 30 seconds left and sank both tries, giving Emory the lead for good. After Oldshue grabbed the board after UC missed two from the line, she was fouled with 19 seconds remaining. She missed both attempts, but freshman Erin Lindahl got a huge offensive board that led to a pair of makes by Oldshue with 11 ticks left.  The Maroons' attempt at a tying trey missed its mark. Lindahl tallied nine points and finished with nine rebounds, her second-highest total of the season.

For the game, Emory connected on 43.9 percent (29 of 66) from the floor and was successful on 75 percent (15 of 20) from the foul line. UC ended the day at 38.0 percent from the field (27 of 71) and just 50 (8 of 16) percent from the stripe. The Eagles did enjoy a decided edge in rebounding, pulling down 50 boards to UC's 36.

Emory trailed by seven points early in the second quarter, but went on a 10-0 blitz, with Kaniut and Lindahl each scoring four points, to take a 26-23 edge with 4:30 left in the stanza. A three-point play by Oldshue put Emory ahead, 33-29, with 1:53 left but UC scored the frame's final five points to post a 34-33 lead at the break. Kaniut scored 12 first-half points to lead Emory while Oldshue added 11.
