From University of Chicago Athletics

The University of Chicago women's basketball team dominated every phase of the game on Tuesday night to earn an impressive 83-38 win against Carroll University.

The Maroons (3-0 record) have won their games by an average margin of 34.7 points so far this season. The Pioneers fell to 0-4.

UChicago jumped out to a 14-2 lead right away, with freshman guard Miranda Burt contributing seven points in that stretch. The home side demonstrated crisp ball movement and exploited its definite size advantage in the post whenever it could. Layups and shots within 10 feet were converted at a high rate all throughout the evening.

The Maroons recorded 33 points in the first quarter with a balanced scoring effort. Even when the team missed shots in close, the players frequently rebounded their misses and then nailed the put-back. Overall for the game, UChicago outrebounded Carroll 50-26, which included 20 offensive boards.

Despite committing four-straight turnovers to end the half, the Maroons were comfortably in control 50-27 at the break.

Burt continued to make an impact by scoring the first six points of the third quarter. Each of the three baskets came in transition off a Maroon steal. The freshman guard was deadly each time she released the ball, making 8 of 9 shots for 17 points. She also contributed defensively on the perimeter with five steals.

The offensive output slowed down in the second half. UChicago became more deliberate with its offense and took its time. With a lead of at least 25 points for the whole second half, the Maroons were able to work in a lot of players. A total of 13 players played at least 10 minutes. UChicago also threw a plethora of defensive looks at Carroll, alternating between aggressive man-to-man and active zone.

The Maroons tallied the opening 14 points of the fourth quarter and glided to the finish. The hosts shot 51.4 percent from the field while limiting Carroll to 23.6 percent shooting. It marks the second time in three games that UChicago's defense has held an opponent under 25 percent.

The ball sharing resulted in 22 assists for the Maroons, who also scored 30 points off 21 turnovers by Carroll. Along with Burt's 17 points, sophomore guard Katrina Williams chipped in 10 points off the bench. Eight players finished with at least six points.
