A suffocating defensive effort in the first half spurred the University of Chicago women's basketball team to a 59-37 win at New York University on Sunday.

The Maroons (18-6 overall, 11-2 UAA) stretched their win streak to seven games and remain tied atop the conference standings. The Violets fell to 13-11 overall and 3-10 in the University Athletic Association (UAA).

UChicago closed out the first quarter with a 13-2 run that turned a one-point deficit into an 18-8 lead. Freshman guard Mia Farrell knocked down consecutive three-pointers to start the rally and senior forward Britta Nordstrom added an and-one layup.

The second quarter was dominated by the Maroons, who held NYU to only five points in the period. A 15-3 streak broke the game open and UChicago raced into halftime with a huge 38-13 lead. The Violets turned the ball over 14 times while only making 25 percent of their field goals. Nordstrom yanked three steals and scored nine points. Senior guard Stephanie Anderson tossed up eight points of her own.

UChicago took a 30-point lead in the third quarter. Despite offensive struggles in the second half, the Maroons led by at least 14 points the rest of the way and handily picked up the 22-point victory.

Junior guard Elizabeth Nye scored a team-high 11 points and nabbed three steals. Sophomore forward Olariche Obi put up 10 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked three shots. Anderson also finished with 10 points.

The Maroons shot 36.7 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three (8-24). NYU shot 30.4 percent overall, including 0 for 10 from beyond the arc. The Violets narrowly won the rebounding battle 38-36. However, UChicago turned NYU over 26 times and scored 37 points off those miscues. The Maroons have now held four opponents to under 40 points this season.
