The No. 11 Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team used a 19-5 run in the fourth quarter to pull away from Case Western Reserve University, defeating the Spartans 92-79 in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Sunday afternoon as sophomore Madeline Homoly finished with a career-best 33 points.
The Bears improved to 16-2 overall and 5-2 within the UAA while Case Western dropped to 11-7, 3-4. WashU remains in a tie for the UAA lead with a 5-2 record with University of Rochester and University of Chicago.
WashU's 92 points are the second highest on the season. Homoly finished with her second double-double on the year as she totaled 11 rebounds in addition to her 33 points.
The Bears bench outscored Case Western's 53-2 with Homoly and sophomore Rachael Sondag combining for 45. Sondag scored all 12 of her points from beyond the arc.
Case Western jumped to an early lead in the first quarter until senior Jenn Dynis' layup three minutes into the contest tied the score at 7-all. The Spartans scored the next five points but a Bears 8-2 run put WashU ahead, 15-14. The Spartans finished off the quarter with five straight points and led 21-20 heading into the second quarter.
Homoly converted consecutive baskets for the Bears to put the team ahead three minutes into the second. Sondag set up the second Homoly bucket with a steal and assist before adding a three from the wing. Junior Natalie Orrmade two free throws before following it with a layup which gave the Bears a seven-point advantage. Dynis sank two free throws and set up a layup by Orr that neutralized multiple baskets from the Spartans heading into the half as WashU led 44-37.
Both Homoly (13) and Orr (10) reached double-digits in the first half. WashU (10-10) and Case Western (2-2) were both perfect from the free throw line.
Homoly and Orr continued shooting well from the floor to begin the third quarter and helped the Bears out to a nine-point lead. Homoly and Orr combined for six baskets and 12 of the Bears 18 points in the quarter. WashU led 62-57 heading into the fourth.
The Spartans quickly brought the game within a single possession as they chipped away to a single point deficit with 8:16 remaining, 64-63. The Bears used a 19-5 run to pull away which included a flurry of threes by Sondag and Orr. The Bears finished the game out with multiple free throws by Homoly, Claudia Smith and Orr down the stretch for the final tally of 92-79.
Homoly led the team with both 33 points and 11 rebounds while Orr totaled 18 points. Senior Jenn Dynis led the team while tying her season-high of four assists. Senior Lily Sarros finished the game with nine rebounds.
