Tartans Win Third Consecutive Game, Top Bethany 73-36

The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team traveled to Bethany College for a Tuesday afternoon contest. The Tartans topped the Bison, 73-36, behind a career-high 24 points from sophomore Katharine Higgins (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) and 22 points from sophomore Makayla Filiere (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton).

The Tartans shot 46.9% from the floor in the first half and led 37-19 at the break. An 8-0 run by the Tartans started the game with Higgins and Filiere each scoring four points apiece. Filiere hit her first four shot attempts with her fourth giving the Tartans a 15-3 lead with 4:59 to go in the first quarter.

A steal by junior Jenn Mayberger (Chesterfield, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) started the second period and led to a jumper by Higgins off an assist from freshman Victoria Avery Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dow). The Tartans doubled their nine-point halftime lead to 18 midway through the second quarter by making 5-of-8 from the field. Higgins and Pereira each hit a three-pointer during the Tartans' 10-3 run.

The Tartans held the Bison to nine points in the second quarter as the home team shot 24.0% from the floor for the half. Filiere hit 7-of-11 from the field for 16 points while picking up three steals and dishing out three assists in the first half.

The Tartans largest lead of the third quarter came when freshman Kylie Huffman (California, Pa./Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic) connected on a jumper in the paint after an offensive rebound by Avery to make the score 55-27.

Avery put in eight of the Tartans' 18 points in the final period, as the Tartans went on for the 37-point victory.

Mayberger finished with seven assists and two steals, as Filiere closed the game with a career-high six steals.
