Emory Wins At NYU

From Emory University Athletics

Junior Ashley Oldshue led four double-figure scorers with 16 points in helping the Emory women's basketball team to a Friday evening win at New York University. The Eagles won for the third straight time and raised their overall record to 9-6 (3-1 UAA) following a 69-64 decision over the Violets who slipped to 8-7 overall, 1-3 in the UAA.

Oldshue closed out the game sinking five-of-nine field goal attempts, along with six makes at the charity stripe in eight opportunities, in registering her 11thdouble-digit performance in 13 outings. In addition, Oldshue dominated on the glass, pulling down a game-high 16 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Perhaps her biggest rebound of the night came with 12 ticks left in the game when, with Emory holding a three-point lead, she snatched a miss of an Eagle free throw (her ninth offensive carom of the contest) whereupon she was fouled and then sank two free throws that would close out the game's scoring.

Supporting Oldshue in scoring department was sophomore Erin Lindahl who tallied 14 points, connecting on six-of-13 field goal attempts, including a pair of triples. Sophomore Lindsey Tse chipped in 12 points, eight coming in the final quarter, while also dishing out eight assists. Sophomore Allison Chernowfinished with 11 points.

NYU opened the final stanza on a 7-0 spurt that knotted the score at 56-56, with 6:48 remaining. The Eagles regained a four-point edge following a jumper by Tse followed by an Oldshue layup.  After a pair of free throws by Kaitlyn Read of NYU, who topped all players with 21 points, cut the Eagles' lead to a pair, a free throw each by Tse and Oldshue kept Emory ahead by a 64-60 margin. The Violets drew to within a pair with 56 seconds remaining after a jumper by Lauren Brown, but a determined drive to the rim by Tse resulted in a basket just as the shot clock expired to push Emory ahead 66-62.

Emory was successful on 43.3 percent (26-60) of its field goal attempts, including 35 percent (7-20) from beyond the arc. NYU hit on 39 percent (23-59) of its opportunities from the floor, but just 21.4 percent (3-14) from distance. Rebounding played an important factor in the final result with the Eagles holding a 45-29 bulge in that category, 15-8 on the offensive end. The Eagles have outrebounded all four conference opponents, three by double figures.

After taking an 18-17 lead after the first quarter, Emory opened the second stanza with a 10-0 run, with Chernow scoring five points in that stretch, to claim a 28-17 cushion. After back-to-back buckets by the Violets' Kayla Patterson, a bucket by Oldshue put Emory ahead, 30-23, with 4:49 left in the frame.  Six straight points by NYU cut the Eagles' lead to a single digit, but a timely three-point field goal by freshman Blair Ripley pushed Emory to a 33-29 lead with 3:15 on the clock.  Those would be the final points of the half for Emory while NYU hit a pair a free throws that left it trailing by a 33-32 heading into halftime.  The Eagles, who connected on 48.3 percent (14-29) from the field in the first half, were led in scoring by Chernow's eight points while Oldshue chipped in seven points to go along with six boards.   The Violets converted 41.9 percent (13-31) of their floor opportunities and saw Kayla Patterson set the scoring pace with 11 points.
