The New York University women's basketball team snapped a four-game losing skid with a 78-58 victory over visiting Carnegie Mellon University in University Athletic Association (UAA) action at the Sportsplex on Friday, January 26, in Manhattan.
NYU (9-8, 2-4) trailed 11-10 midway through the first quarter, but scored the next seven points and never trailed again.
The Violets led 23-15 after the opening quarter and increased their lead to 20 points, 43-23, at halftime.
The onslaught continued as NYU scored the first seven points of the third quarter. The lead eventually rose to as many as 36 points, 65-29, when Kaitlyn Read hit a jumper with 12 seconds left in the quarter.
Carnegie Mellon (9-8, 1-5) was able to cut the margin to 20 points just before the final buzzer as Jenn Mayberger hit a layup to make the final score 78-58.
Read finished with a game-high 25 points in 28 minutes of action. The graduate student was 9-of-15 from the field, including 3-of-6 from long range.
Makayla Fillere led the Tartans with 19 points.
NOTABLES:
- NYU dished out 21 assists on 29 made field goals. Read finished with a game-best seven helpers.
- In addition to her 25 points and seven assists, Read also filled the stat sheet with five rebounds and a game-high five steals.
- Kayla Patterson led the way in the Violets' frontcourt, finishing just one rebound shy of a double-double (14 points, nine rebounds).
- NYU outrebounded the Tartans 49-29. Cassidy Fontana (seven rebounds) and Olivia Linebarger (five rebounds) also provided help on the glass.
- The Violets were 17-of-19 (88.2%) from the foul line in the victory.
