NYU Holds Off Emory, 63-58, on the Road

From NYU Athletics

The New York University women's basketball team defeated host Emory University 63-58 in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Friday, February 16, in Atlanta, GA.

NYU (14-9, 7-5 UAA) took a six-point lead into halftime and increased it to as many as 13 early in the third quarter, but needed to hold off a late Emory (12-11, 6-6 UAA) rally to preserve its six win in its last seven games.

Oliva Linebarger sank a three-point to put NYU ahead 36-23 with 8:20 to play in the third quarter, but the Eagles answered Linebarger's triple with four-straight points and eventually cut the margin to five, 38-33, less than three minutes later.

The squads went back-and-forth for the remainder of the third period before Kaitlyn Read drained a jumper at the third-quarter buzzer to improve the Violets' advantage to 48-40 with 10 minutes to play.

NYU's lead became 11 on a three-pointer from Kaitlyn Read with just over five minutes remaining, but the Eagles did anything but go away.

Emory scored seven straight after Read's shot from long-range and trailed by just four, 55-51, with 2:56 to play.

The Violets were able to force key defensive stops down the stretch and make clutch free throws to extend their lead to 63-55, before a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Ashley Oldshue made the final score 63-58.

Read led NYU in scoring for the 10th-straight game, tallying 22 points. Linebarger added a career-high-tying 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 from long range.

Oldshue led three Eagles in double figures with 17 points.

NOTABLES:

- Read's 22 points give her 1,732 for her career, which ranks third in program history. She needs 70 more to pass Jen Krolikowski ('97) for second-all-time.

- Catherine Gould started for the first time in her career and did not disappoint. The rookie scored seven points and dished out three assists in a career-high 32 minutes of action.

- Read, Cassidy Fontana and Kayla Patterson each grabbed seven boards to lead the Violets. NYU out-rebounded Emory 33-30 in Friday's win, including 12-7 on the offensive boards.
