With her selection to the honorable mention squad, University of Chicago junior forward Olariche Obi became the first All-American since 2011-12 for the women's basketball program after a stellar season for the University Athletic Association champion Maroons.
Obi, who averaged a double-double with 12.5 points and 11.2 rebounds per contest, was selected to the 2017-18 Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-American Honorable Mention team, as released by the organization Thursday.
The 5-foot-10 power forward finished the year ranked 25th in rebounding in all of NCAA Division III and her 15 double-doubles stood 20th nationally. A first-team all-UAA and second-team D3hoops.com All-Region selection, Obi's 302 rebounds and 75 steals this season were the third-most in UChicago history.
Also leading the Maroons in field goal percentage at a 47.6 percent clip, Obi helped UChicago rattle off 22-straight wins en route to a perfect 14-0 UAA season and the team's second-straight trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament Second Round.
Kate Kerrigan of Bowdoin College was selected as the WBCA's Division III Player of the Year. The Player of the Year and the 10-member Coaches' All-America team in each division are selected by a committee of WBCA member coaches in that division. The Wade Trophy is presented to the best player in NCAA Division I.
Taylor Simpson and Morgan Herrick were the last Maroons to earn All-American status, both receiving the honor during the 2011-12 season. Obi's award marks the 10th overall All-American award for the women's basketball program.
