The No. 19 University of Chicago women's basketball team captured its 13th-straight victory with an efficient second half in Friday's 79-61 league win at Emory University.
The winning streak tops the streak the Maroons (15-2, 6-0 University Athletic Association) set during the 2014-15 season when UChicago rattled off 12 straight. The all-time record is 27 straight wins, set by the 2011-12 squad that finished 27-1.
Junior forward Olariche Obi had another big night offensively for the visitors, pouring in 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting to go along with five rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Sophomore teammate Taylor Lake added 17 points, seven boards and three blocks and classmate Mia Farrell had 14 points, three assists and two steals.
UChicago was nearly lights out from the field at Emory's Woodruff Center, shooting 55.6 percent (30-of-54) from the field while holding the hosts to just 37.3 percent (22-of-59).
Up just one, 40-39, at halftime, the Maroons used the second part of the third quarter to turn the tide of the game. Sophomore Jamie Kockenmeister drilled a triple at the 4:47 mark of the third frame to make it 54-45 in favor of UChicago, setting up a stellar defensive stand to close the quarter.
Emory (10-7, 4-2) didn't score the rest of the period and Obi (two buckets), Farrell (made jumper) and Miranda Burt (layup) aided the Maroons' 8-0 run to take a 62-47 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Eagles didn't come close after that, as UChicago led by as many as 21 (77-56) after a Lake free throw at the 3:10 mark.
First-year Marissa Igunbor had a solid game off the bench, contributing 10 points and six boards in 18 minutes of play and Burt finished with 10 points on near-perfect 4-of-5 shooting from the floor.
The Maroons capitalized off 20 forced Emory turnovers, scoring 22 points, and UChicago dominated in the paint, outscoring the Eagles 46-20.
