Sophomore Mia Farrell captured the Fred Raizk Memorial Classic Championship's top honor and the University of Chicago women's basketball team topped host Wilmington 71-55 to complete a two-day sweep of the field Thursday.
The Maroons (9-2) won their seventh-straight game after defeating Earlham 93-64 Wednesday, capturing the tournament title in the process to conclude the nonconference portion of their schedule. UChicago kicks off University Athletic Association play at rival Washington-St. Louis Jan. 6.
Farrell -- named the tournament's most valuable player -- scored 16 points on crisp 7-of-10 shooting, senior Elizabeth Nye added 13 points and sophomore Jamie Kockenmeister chipped in 12 to round out UChicago players in double-figures.
Farrell, Taylor Lake (nine points, eight boards) and Kockenmeister were all named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts.
After a tight first half Thursday, the Maroons dominated the third quarter to build a lead as big as 25, 68-43, with 6:54 left in the fourth frame. The host Quakers (6-4) were as close as two, 23-21, after a Kelly Noll triple midway through the second quarter, but three-straight makes from downtown by first-year Meaghan O'Hara, Kockenmeister, and Nye – plus a layup by junior Olariche Obi – helped give the Maroons a seven-point advantage at halftime, 34-27.
In the third, UChicago led by nine, 43-34, before finishing the frame on a 19-6 run to build a 22-point lead to open the final period. Lake (seven points) and Nye (five points) led the charge, including a three-point play the old-fashioned way by Lake.
The Maroons finished the game shooting 43.5 percent (14-of-35) from the field and held Wilmington to 31.6 percent (18-of-57). UChicago found its range from 3 (10-of-28) while the Quakers made just two from deep on 2-for-9 shooting.
UChicago came away with a big win despite being outrebounded (49-30) and losing the battle in second-chance points (13-6), but forced the Quakers into 23 turnovers while committing just 13.
Mackenzie Campbell led Wilmington with 12 points in the loss.
