Defense and Rebounding Lead Yellowjackets Past Brockport

Defense and Rebounding Lead Yellowjackets Past Brockport

From University of Rochester Athletics

Rochester's defense and board work was strong as the Yellowjackets posted a 57-33 women's basketball victory over The College at Brockport on Monday evening.

It was the first game back after a six-day layoff due to the Thanksgiving holiday. In some cases, the time away showed. Rochester committed 20 turnovers and did not shoot very well from the floor. However, UR held a commanding advantage on the boards (52-31) and hold Brockport to 18% shooting (9-49) overall, 2-10 outside the arc.

"I felt we defended really well," said head coach Jim Scheible afterwards. "And we rebounded."

With the win, the Yellowjackets improved to 4-0 while Brockport is 2-2. Rochester is ranked number 11 in the current WBCA poll and was No. 21 in the pre-season D3hoops.com poll (with the new poll due out in the next day).

UR returns to the Palestra on Wednesday to host SUNY Oswego at 7 pm. Rochester competes in the Williams College Invitational on Friday (vs. Tufts University) and Saturday (against host Williams).

Alexandra Leslie and Mary Kronenwetter were the only Yellowjackets in double figures. Leslie scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds. Kronenwetter had 11 points and six rebounds. Lauren Deming scored eight points. Lauren Foley had seven points in her first game back and Lizzy Atkinson scored seven as well.

Juliana Taylor led Brockport with nine points. Emily Nestler scored eight. Bailey Pratt and Lindsey Johnson had five points each.

UR led, 13-10, after the first quarter. The Golden Eagles were ice cold in period two, scoring just five points. Rochester led, 24-15, at the half. It was 39-26 through three before Rochester's offense finally began to click in the fourth quarter and UR was able to pull away.

A conventional three-point play from Leslie plus a foul line jumper put the lead at 18, 44-26. After Nestler banked in a shot to get Brockport within 44-28, Deming drove for a layup (46-28). Brianna Neeley scored on a layup.

Rochester answered with an 11-1 run. Atkinson sank a three-pointer from right wing, Kronenwetter made two free throws, Foley put in a reverse layup, Moriah Kunes hit a jumper off the right block, and Emma Michaels made a layup in the closing seconds. Krystal Hunter had the only Brockport point – one free throw after the two free throws by Kronenwetter. By then, the lead was 20.
