Natalie Orr Leads the Charge to Bears First UAA Win of the Season

The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team defeated New York University 84-69 on Sunday afternoon in the Bears third University Athletic Association (UAA) home game of the season at the WU Field House.

The Bears improved to 10-4 overall and 1-2 within UAA play while NYU fell to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in the UAA. WashU shot 57.1-percent from beyond the arc (8-of-14) while holding NYU to 28.6-percent (6-of-21).

Senior Natalie Orr moved into fifth place all-time in three-pointers made at WashU in program history on 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range increasing her career total to 129. She moved from a tie in eighth place with Beth Ruether (125) to pass Amy Schweizer (126), Halsey Ward (127) and Zoë Unruh (128).

Orr finished with the second double-double of her season with 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Junior Madeline Homoly also finished with a double-double, her fourth on the season, with a team-high 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Also scoring in double figures for the Bears were junior Becca Clark-Callender (14) and junior Katie Claussner(10).

WashU built a 10-point lead in the first quarter multiple times including 24-14 on a layup by Claussner with 58 seconds remaining.  The Violets scored the final five points of the quarter to trim the Bears lead to 24-19.

Clark-Callender converted back-to-back baskets including a three-pointer to help the Bears out to a six-point lead, 31-25, with five minutes remaining in the second quarter. NYU's Kaitlyn Read hit a deep triple to bring the Violets back within three, but Clark-Callender once again helped the Bears with a trey in the final minute of the first half. Shaye McGoey sank a pair of free-throws for NYU to close out the first half scoring as WashU led 38-34.

The Bears turned the ball over 15 times in the first half but outrebounded NYU 24-13. WashU's bench chipped in 21 first half points. 

NYU tied the game up with a 5-0 run late in the third quarter until Orr's turn around jumper pushed the Bears ahead 52-50. The Violets answered with a jumper of their own prior to four free throws by Homoly and senior Hannah Koenig for WashU. Clark-Callender added three free-throws of her own after getting fouled on the final play of the quarter and WashU led 59-55.

Junior Rachael Sondag hit a big three-pointer with 2:20 to go in the fourth quarter that pushed the Bears lead to 73-65. Orr added another triple on a second chance basket that gave the Bears a 10-point advantage. Free-throws down the stretch by Homoly and Orr concluded the Bears scoring.

Read finished with a game-high 29 points for NYU as the only Violet to reach double figure scoring. She also tallied eight assists while Kayla Patterson finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
