The New York University women's fencing team defeated Drew University but fell to Stevens Institute of Technology in the home opener of the 2013-14 season on Thursday, November 7, at the Coles Sports Center.
The Violets defeated Drew in their first match, dominating all three weapons en route to a 22-5 victory. In the second match, the Violets suffered a tough loss against Stevens 7-20.
Highlights vs Drew:
- In foil, the women won 7-2. Freshman Tiffany Liu compiled a 3-0 record, while Rebecca Popkin and Kelly Ng went 2-1.
- In epee, the Violets were even more impressive, shutting out Drew 9-0. Alyssa Parkhurst, Lily Hu, and Jess Sherman all had perfect 3-0 showings.
- The women closed out the match going 6-3 in the sabre. Sophomore Emily Wu had a strong performance, going 2-1.
Highlights vs Stevens:
- The Violets lost 6-3 in foil, with all around 1-2 records from Liu, Popkin and Ng.
- The women struggled in epee, falling to the Ducks 8-1. Parkhurst led NYU with a 1-2 record.
- The Violets fell to Stevens 6-3 in sabre as well, though Cydney Williams and Wu both went 1-1.
"We've only been practicing for about three weeks," said Head Coach Steve Mormando. "Not enough time to get generated. So three weeks from now we're gonna be a little bit different. We'll see what happens then."
The Violets return back to action on Sunday, December 8, at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT.
