From Brandeis University Athletics

The Brandeis University fencing team won 10 of their 11 matches  at the second Northeast Fencing Conference tournaments on Saturday at Brown University. The men, who went 5-0, clinched at least a share of the NFC title, as they finished the season with a 9-1 record. The women went 5-1 and are 9-3 overall in NFC action.

On the women's side, the Judges opened with a tough 16-11 loss to host Brown. After 18-9 wins over Vassar and BC, Brandeis pulled out back-to-back 14-13 victories over Tufts and Dartmouth. The Judges wrapped up with a 19-8 win over Smith.

Against the home team, women's epee picked up an impressive 7-2 win, but the Bears won the sabre and foil by the same score. Brandeis swept all three weapons against Vassar, with sabre going 9-0. The sabre squad won 8-1 over BC, while foil won 7-2 to help the Judges defeat the Eagles.

Against Tufts, it was foil (7-2) and epee (6-3) helping balance out a sabre loss (8-1) in a one-point victory, while rookie Liz Feller (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. / Hendrick Hudson) went 3-0 to pace epee to a 7-2 win over Dartmouth, offsetting a 5-4 loss in foil and a 6-3 sabre defeat. JuniorCaroline Mattos (Providence, R.I./Lasalle Acad.) also went 3-0 in the 14-13 win. The Judges match against Smith was another three-weapon sweep.

Mattos turned in the best overall record on the day for Brandeis, going 15-1. Feller wound up with a 10-5 record, while sophomore Nina Sayles (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Loomis Chaffee) was 10-3.

The Brandeis men swept Brown (14-13), Vassar (18-9), Boston College (18-9), Tufts (24-3) and Dartmouth (20-7). The tightest match of the weekend was the opener against host Brown. The sabre squad won, 6-3, offsetting 5-4 defeats in foil and epee. The match itself was tied at 13-13 when rookie epeeist Hunter Stusnick (New Vernon, N.J./Chatham) earned a 5-2 victory for the win.  In round two, foil (8-1) and sabre (7-2) helped the Judges clinch victory over Vassar, while the Judges swept all three weapons against BC, Tufts and Dartmouth.

The top individual performers for the Judges at the meet were rookie sabre fencer Kyle Berney (Shreveport, La./Caddo Magnet School), who was 10-3; senior foil Noah Berman (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto), who was 8-1; and rookie foil Guillermo Narvaez (Metepec, Mexico / Technologico de Monterrey), who was 8-2.

The share of the NFC title is Brandeis's first since 2009. The Judges will win the crown outright if 4-1 Sacred Heart suffers another loss at the final meet next weekend.
