Brandeis Posts 4-1 Record at Eric Sollee Invitational

The Brandeis University fencing teams hosted the Eric Sollee Invitational this afternoon, with coach Bill Shipman honoring his team's 14 seniors during the course of the day.

OVERALL TEAM PERFORMANCES

  • The Judges posted a 4-1 record on the women's side and a 3-2 mark for the men.
  • The tournament included what is considered the unofficial University Athletic Association matchup between Brandeis and NYU. In that match, the Brandeis women (15-12) and the NYU men (20-7) prevailed.
  • It was the fourth-straight win against NYU for the Brandeis women.
  • The women also defeated New Jersey Institute of Technology (22-5), Hunter College (24-3) and Haverford (19-8).
  • Their lone loss came to Stevens Institute of Technology (12-15).
  • The men suffered a loss to NJIT in the opening round (11-16), but defeated Stevens (16-11), Hunter (21-6) and Haverford (18-9).
  • The Brandeis women are now 18-5 overall on the season, while the men are now 15-5.

SQUAD PERFORMANCES

  • Brandeis's best squad on the day was the women's foil, which went undefeated at 5-0. The Judges earned 7-2 wins over NJIT and Hunter; won 6-3 over Stevens; and edged NYU and Haverford, 5-4.
  • Women's epee posted a 4-1 mark, with dominant 8-1 performances against Hunter and Haverford and a key 7-2 win over NYU. They defeated NJIT, 6-3, but suffered their only loss to Stevens by the same score.
  • Women's sabre and men's epee were both 3-2 on the day, while men's foil and sabre were each 2-3. The last two squads suffered two of their three losses by 5-4 scores.

TOP INDIVIDUALS  - WOMEN

  • Senior epee Sonya Glickman (Valhalla, N.Y. / Valhalla) went 10-1 for the best winning percentage on the day for any Brandeis fencer. Included in her wins was a 5-3 victory over Julia Garcia of NJIT, a semifinalist at the NCAA Championships last year, and a 3-0 mark against the Highlanders and against NYU.
  • Classmate and squadmate Gwendolyn Mowell (Wyckoff, N.J. / Indian Hills) was 9-2 in epee, including 3-0 against Hunter.
  • The foil squad was paced by senior Caroline Mattos (Providence, R.I./LaSalle Academy), who was just behind Glickman at 9-1. Mattos was 3-0 against NJIT and 2-1 vs. NYU, with single wins in the other three matches.
  • Sophomore women's foil Zimeng Xue (Beijing, China / Peking Univ. Affiliated) was 7-2 in three matches, including a 3-0 mark against Hunter.
  • For the sabre squad, sophomore Laura Broffman (East Norwich, N.Y. / Oyster Bay)was 7-1 in three matches – going 3-0 vs Hunter and 2-0 vs. NJIT - while junior Ashley Jean (Norwood, Mass. / Fontbonne Academy) was 8-4 in her first action of the semester after an injury.
