Brandeis Defeats Wellesley, 19-8

The Brandeis women's fencing team won all three weapons tonight as the Judges defeated Wellesley College, 19-8, in the annual mid-week meeting between the two teams. The Judges improve to 14-4 on the season with the win, while the Blue fall to 7-8.

The Judges were led by the sabre squad, which earned an 8-1 victory on the night. Sophomore Laura Broffman (East Norwich, N.Y. / Oyster Bay) and junior Nina Sayles (Mamaroneck, N.Y. / Loomis-Chaffee) each posted a 3-0 record, with scoring her first 11 touches in a row before surrendering one in her third match. Senior Deborah Abiri (Old Westbury, N.Y. / North Shore) went 2-1. Rookie Meg Harney (Wilmette, Ill. / Cranbrook Kingswood) won Wellesley's only sabre point.

In epee action, Brandeis posted a 6-3 win. Seniors Sonya Glickman (Valhalla, N.Y. / Valhalla) and Gwendolyn Mowell (Wyckoff, N.J. / Indian Hills) each went 2-0 for the Judges by a cumulative 10-4 score. Sophomore Liz Feller (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. / Hendrick Hudson) and senior Rosa Zhang (E. Setauket, N.Y. / Ward-Melville) also picked up wins for Brandeis. Wellesley's Cassandra Cronin (Johns Creek, Ga. / Northview) earned two of the Blue's three points.

Six different fencers took the strip for Brandeis in foil action, with rookie Joanne Carminucci (Brewster, NY / North Salem) going 2-0. The other three points came from seniors Emilia Dwyer (New York, N.Y. / Hunter H.S.) and Annie Kim (Morganville, N.J. / Freehold), who each went 1-1, and classmate Caroline Mattos (Providence, R.I./LaSalle Acad.), who won her only match, 5-0, to clinch victory for the squad. Sophomore Taylor Hood (Lexington, Ky. / Henry Clay) went 2-1 for the visitors before falling to Mattos.
