The New York University women's fencing team opened its 2015-16 season at the Temple University Open in Philadelphia, PA, on Halloween Saturday, October 31.

Several Violets had outstanding debuts for the team, including Anastasiya Muravyeva. The freshman won all four of her foil bouts in the first round and four more in the second round to advance to direct elimination. She advanced to the Round of 16 and wound up with a sixth-place finish out of 82 fencers in the weapon.

"It was a fantastic result to start her NYU career," said Assistant Coach Lauren Willock. "She showed a lot of maturity in all of her bouts."

Two freshmen also performed well in sabre, as Maria Free finished 10th and Jacqueline Tubbs was 14th out of 75 fencers.

"Both missed the top 8 in very competitive and close bouts," Willock explained.

A couple of veterans led the way in epee, as junior Cyn Chau and sophomore Stephanie Cunninghamtook 10th and 15th, respectively, out of an 84-person field.

"They both showed a lot of leadership on the strip throughout the day," Willock said.

There was no team scoring at the Open.

NOTABLES:

- Sophomore Joanna Tabor finished 28th in epee.

- Freshman Erika Levine made her debut with a 25th-place finish in sabre.
