Joanne Carminucci Leads Judges to 4-2  Mark at FDU

The Brandeis women's fencing team posted a 4-2 record today at the Fairleigh Dickinson Invitational in New Jersey, led by the foil squad that did not lose any of its six matches today.

The Judges defeated squads from Hunter College, host FDU, Drew University and club squad Wagner. Their losses came to Temple, ranked seventh in the nation, and Johns Hopkins.

The foil squad, led by sophomore Joanne Carminucci (Brewster, N.Y. / North Salem) and rookie Jessica Gets (Morganville, N.J. / Marlborough), went 6-0, including an impressive 6-3 win over Temple. Carminucci went 12-0 on the day, while Gets posted a 10-3 record. Senior Chaya Schapiro (Los Angeles, Calif./Lycee de LA) posted at least one win against all six opponents as well.

The epee squad went 3-3 on the day, including a 9-0 win over Wagner and 8-1 over Hunter. Junior Liz Feller (Cordlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) led the squad with an 8-2 record, including 3-0 against Temple and FDU.

The saber squad was 3-2 for the meet, ass Wagner did not field a squad. The Judges had a 7-2 win over Fairleigh Dickinson and edged both Hunter and Drew by 5-4 marks. Senior Nina Sayles (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Loomis Chaffee) went 7-3 to lead the squad, while junior Laura Broffman (East Norwich, N.Y. / Oyster Bay) and rookie Hannah Mui (New Hope, Pa. / New Hope/Solesbury) each had five wins.

The Judges are back in action on Wednesday evening when they head to Boston College for the annual Beanpot Fencing Tournament.
