NYU Hosts Columbia in Dual Meet

From NYU Athletics

The New York University women's fencing team was defeated 25-2 by two-time defending NCAA National Champion Columbia University on Tuesday, November 22, in the Violets' first dual meet of the 2016-17 season. The competition was held at the Rosenthal Pavilion in NYU's Kimmel Center in Manhattan.

The Violets won one foil bout and one epee bout in falling to the Lions, who are currently 11-1 this season.

"Columbia is going to win a lot of matches like this this season," said NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando. "They are a very, very, very good team."

Sophomore Anastasiya Muravyeva recorded the Violets' lone foil victory, defeating the Lions' Quinn Crum 5-2.

In epee, junior captain Stephanie Cunningham provided the Violets' lone win, defeating Columbia's Elise Gout 5-4.

"We're a very young team, so I cannot say I'm surprised by the outcome," Mormando explained. "But, we'll continue to work hard and progress as the season continues."
