From NYU Athletics

New York University's women's golf team placed second at the NYU Invitational, which was held on Saturday and Sunday, September 19-20, at the Spook Rock Golf Course in Suffern, NY.

The Violets shot 621 as a team over the weekend tournament after shooting 309 on Sunday, placing them seven strokes behind the invitational winners Williams College (614, 304-310).

NYU finished 17 strokes ahead of third-place Randolph-Macon College (638).

Catherina Li led NYU, finishing in a tie for third place with Claire O'Neill of St. Lawrence University and Olivia Bowling of Randolph-Macon with an overall score of 153 after shooting 71 on Sunday.

Freshman Jenni Bluetling came in second for NYU, shooting a 76 on Sunday to compile an overall score of 155.

"Catherina was outstanding. She had a very solid round Saturday and a great under-par score today," said Head Coach Todd Kolean. "I can't say enough about our young freshmen. They really kept us in this tournament. We beat Williams today. They are the defending national champions, but we left strokes out on the green."

Williams' Sophie Kitchen, who led the pack yesterday with a 69, finished Sunday with a 77 and won the individual championship.

Overall, 11 teams competed at the Invitational (NYU's "B" team did not count in the standings).

Highlights:

- Sophomores Alyssa Poentis and Kristin Lee tied for 17th with overall scores of 161. On Sunday, they scored 82 and 80, respectively.

Angela Yang put up an 83 on Sunday to tie for eighth with Amherst College's Kate Weiss and Randolph-Macon's Ruby Rim with an overall score of 156.

"We'll see Williams again next week at our next tournament," Kolean revealed. "It is a difficult course. Our returning athletes know the course well. But, we haven't played to our appropriate level there yet. I do, however, expect us to be contenders."
