Washington Finishes Third at Golfweek Fall Invitational

Led by a pair of fifth-place finishes from junior Samantha Han and senior Connie Zhou, the No. 7-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's golf team finished third at the Golfweek Fall Invitational held Sunday-Tuesday at Baytowne Golf Club in Sandestin, Fla.

"We obviously did some things really well over the three days  - like leading the field in birdies and finishing second in total pars," said WashU head coach Ellen Port. "However, we played the par 5's poorly and had some uncharacteristically high numbers -- in the end this is what kept us out of the winners circle."

In a field that featured seven top-20 teams in NCAA Division III, No. 14 University of Texas-Tyler (315-303-313, 931) edged No. 10 Sewanee: University of the South (309-310-313, 932) by one stroke to claim the team title.

WashU was third with a 940 (312-309-319), while No. 17 Huntingdon College (320-301-322, 943) and No. 21 Illinois Wesleyan University (318-305-322, 945) rounded out the top five in the 18-team field.

Han fired the low round of the day with a 3-over 75 to vault into a tie for fifth place with a 231 (79-77-75). Zhou, the defending champion, also tied for fifth place with a 231 (78-73-80) after struggling on the final day.

Texas-Tyler's Laura Lindsey had a five-stroke lead entering the final round, and edged Emily Javadi of Sewanee with a birdie on No. 18 to claim the individual title. Lindsey shot a three-day total of 218 (74-68-76).
