Samantha Haubenstock of Washington University Rises to Fifth at NCAA Championship Finale

Freshman Samantha Haubenstock of the No. 15-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's golf team carried her strong momentum from the third round into the fourth and final round Friday afternoon, shattering the WashU 72 hole low score record on her way to tying for fifth place at the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships at Bay Oaks Country Club.

Haubenstock worked her way up the leaderboard Friday beginning tied for 10th place. She closes out the tournament with an 11-over par 299 (74-76-76-73), bettering the Bears previous 72 hole record of 309 set by Olivia Lugar in 2011-12.

"Sam strung together four solid rounds in the biggest tournament of the year," said head coach Ellen Port. "Today she hit 16-of-18 greens and 12-of-14 fairways. Her touch on and around the greens was phenomenal all week."

Haubenstock totaled four birdies, five bogies and nine pars on the final day of the tournament. She finished with a stroke average of 4.81 on par-5's which tied for second best, scoring three under on the week.

Rhodes College won its second straight national title, edging George Fox University by two strokes. Bridgewater College's Christina Herbert 293 (74-69-76-74) took home the individual title.

"Sam demonstrated mental fortitude and the ability to hit a clutch shot or putt when needed," added coach Port. "She accomplished something that is very challenging to do – stringing together four solid rounds at the biggest tournament of the year."
