Washington University in St. Louis' women's golf coach Ellen Port claimed her seventh United States Golf Association (USGA) crown with a victory in the U.S. Senior Women's Amateur Golf Championship Thursday morning at the Wellesley Country Club in Massachusetts with a 3 and 2 victory over Andrea Kraus of Baltimore, Md.
Port who was the third seed after stroke play, celebrated her birthday on Wednesday with a semifinal match victory over Laura Coble of Augusta, Ga.
In the championship match, Kraus took the lead on the first hole with a birdie, but Port evened things up winning the third hole. Port fell behind on the very next hole with a bogey but maintained the one-hole disadvantage until a birdie on the par 3 seventh hole squared things up.
Port followed with a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole to take the lead, but things were evened up for the last time on hole number nine. She was the victor of the 10th hole and maintained the one-up advantage through the 13th when she added to her lead with a birdie on hole 14. Port took a three-up advantage after the 16th hole to claim the title.
She is now tied for second most United States Golf Association (USGA) titles won by a female with seven. She has won four USGA Women's Mid Amateur titles and three USGA Women's Senior Amateur titles.
