Freshman Samantha Haubenstock won the individual title to lead the No. 17 Washington University in St. Louis women's golf team to victory at the Joe Duncan Rhodes Invitational tournament Monday afternoon as all six Bears competing on the second day shot in the 70s at the Windyke Country Club.
The Bears nearly matched their day one 302 finish with a round two 306 to maintain a two-stroke advantage on the reigning Division III National Champions and tournament host No. 4 Rhodes College (610, 313-297). Rounding out the competition were Huntingdon College (622, 314-308), Piedmont College (641, 315-326), Birmingham-Souther College (643, 318-325) and Millsaps College (718, 354-364). WashU's lineup totaled five birdies and an eagle on the second day of action.
"I'm super proud of the team," exclaimed head coach Ellen Port. "They have prepared well over the past six weeks pouring themselves into the process. One of our goals was to be in position to – Win – going into the final day of each spring tourney. We've reached that goal in our first three tournaments and today we sealed the deal, which is not an easy task in golf."
Haubenstock led the Bears charge with a one over par-73 on the second day as she finished round two with two birdies and an eagle. Haubenstock's two-day score of 145 (72-73) was followed by sophomore Chloe DiPetrillo (153, 77-76), junior Erin Drolet (154, 76-78), sophomore Hanna Jia (154, 76-78), freshman Angelica Harris (156, 78-78) and senior Jessica Wibawa (161, 82-79).
The WashU tournament victory is the first of the spring season and third of the academic year as the Bears captured two other tournament titles in the fall. This is Haubenstock's third medalist honor as the individual champion on the season.
