The Washington University in St. Louis women's golf team captured its 30th tournament title in school history and second of the season by holding onto a slim one stroke lead after the two day Illinois Wesleyan University Fall Classic concluded Sunday afternoon.
The Bears shot 313 on the second day of the tournament which combined with its day one total of 301 to narrowly defeat DePauw University with a total of 614.
Freshman Samantha Haubenstock led the way for the Bears shooting a team low for the second day in a row. Haubenstock improved on her first day performance by one stroke, shooting a one-under-par 71 which combined for a two-day total of 143. She placed second in the tournament.
"Today was proof that you can never give up," said head coach Ellen Port, who capped off a tremendous week with the WashU win after previously winning the U.S. Senior Women's Amateur Golf Championship on Thursday. "Every stroke, every putt and decision you make on the course is important."
Chloe DiPetrillo and Erin Drolet both finished the second round with scores of 78. DiPetrillo placed seventh overall while freshman Angelica Harris shot a season-low 74 for the Bears "B" team. Harris placed eighth overall individually.
