Violets Open NYU Invitational

From NYU Athletics

The New York University women's golf team opened up play at the NYU Fall Invitational, which is taking place on Saturday and Sunday, October 14 and 15, at Forest Hill Field Club in Bloomfield, NJ.

NYU, which is ranked #1 in the most recent Golfstat.com poll, has a pair of squads in the 10-team field. The NYU 'A' team shot a 315 to land in first place while the NYU 'B' squad shot a 329 and is in fourth place after 18 holes. Williams College (320), Carnegie Mellon University (328) and Mount Holyoke College (347) are also in the top five.

"It's always good to be ahead after the first day," said NYU Head Coach Brad Johnson. "It's also good to see the depth of our program, as both of our teams are in the top four."

Arisa Kimura was the top Violet on day one, shooting a five-over-par 77 to land in second place among 51 players. Holly Davenport of Williams leads the event by two strokes after shooting a three-over-par 75.

Patty Treevichaphan (third place; 78) and Jenni Bluetling (fifth-place; 79) also represent the Violets in the top five.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Six different Violets find themselves tied for eighth or better. Behind Kimura, Treevichaphan and Bluetling are Alyssa Poentis, Ashley Tsoi and Kristin Lee, who each shot an 80.

- Ashley Lung and Navika Kuchakulla both shot an 81 and are tied for 12th place. That gives NYU eight players who shot between 77 and 81 on day one.

"Our depth is certainly a good problem to have," added Johnson. "I'm excited to see who performs well tomorrow, the last day of our fall season."
