The New York University women's golf team, currently ranked #3 in the nation by Golfstat.com, has completed its opening round of play at the NCAA Championship, which is being held Tuesday-Friday, May 8-11, at the Mission Inn Resort & Club at Howey-in-the-Hills, FL.

The Violets totaled 321 strokes and are tied for third place after 18 holes on the par-73, 5,804-yard El Campeon Golf Course.

Number-two ranked Claremont Mudd Scripps and #4 Williams College lead the 25-team field with 311 totals.

Tied with NYU in third place are University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent Carnegie Mellon University and Carleton College.

NYU's top individual performer on Tuesday was Navika Kuchakulla, who shot a six-over-par 79. She recorded a par-37 over the back nine and is currently tied for 15th place.

The Violets' next lowest round was produced by Arisa Kimura, who shot 80 and sits in a tie for 24th place.

Alyssa Poentis and Patty Treevichaphan each shot 81 and are tied for 37th place.

NYU's fifth golfer, Jenni Bluetling, exited the course after shooting 85.

Overall, 130 golfers are competing.

"We left some shots out on the course, but the first round is always tough," said Head Coach Brad Johnson. "Once we settle in, we'll play better. We are in the thick of contention, and a better day on Wednesday will have us closer to the leaders."
