NYU Opens Competition in George Phinney Jr. Golf Classic

The New York University women's golf team is currently in fifth place after round one of the George Phinney Jr. Golf Classic at the par-71 Ralph Myre Golf Course at Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT. The two-day event is taking place over Saturday and Sunday, September 28-29.

After shooting 324 on Saturday, the Violets find themselves in fifth out of 12 teams. Host Middlebury sits in first at 312, followed by Amherst College and Williams College at 317, and Wellesley College at 322.

Sophia Bian (Vancouver, Canada/St. John's School) currently leads all Violets after shooting six-over-par 77, tying her for fourth place out of 66 golfers.

"Sophia had a good day out on the course and really elevated the team," remarked Head Coach Brad Johnson.

Next up for the Violets was Camilla Chung (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatian College Prep), who finished round one tied for 17th after shooting nine-over-par 80. Also competing were Ashley Lung (Henderson, NV/Coronado), who ended the day in 21st with a score of 82, and Jessica Wu (Langley, BC/Mountain Secondary School), who shot 85 and is tied for 29th. Arisa Kimura (Bethesda, MD/Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart) rounded out the scoring for NYU with a day-one total of 86, tying her for 34th. 

"Overall it wasn't our best day," added Johnson, "We should be able to improve in the second round tomorrow."
