From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Led by third-place finishes from sophomore Eric Sullivan (Middletown, Ohio/Lakota East) and freshman Luke Marcelli (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson), the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team placed eighth overall in the 11-team field at the Rochester Institute of Technology Invitational on Saturday.
Sullivan was 3-1 in the 197-pound bracket, while Marcelli went 6-1 at 149. Overall, four Spartans placed at the event.
Sullivan was edged by a score of 6-4 in his opening bout but advanced in the consolation bracket via a medical forfeit. Sullivan then defeated Andrew Cole of SUNY-Oswego by a 10-5 decision and Tyler Keating of Baldwin Wallace University, 9-3, in the third-place match.
Marcelli pinned his opening opponent, Gage Corns from Baldwin Wallace, in a time of 1:21 before defeating Nicholas Heck of Oneonta State by an 11-3 major decision. In the consolation bracket, Marcelli was a combined 4-0. He began with back-to-back decisions versus BW's Graham Montague (9-3) and Joey Schmidt (3-2). The rookie then defeated Wesleyan University's (Conn.) Christopher Siracusa, 6-3, and SUNY-Oswego's Abubakarr Sow by a 12-4 major decision in the third-place match.
In addition, freshman Conor Driscoll (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) finished sixth with a 3-2 record at 184, while fellow freshmen David Brunk (Hood River, Ore./Hood River Valley), Nick Lees (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and Matt Moy (Bayside, N.Y./Stuyvesant) all won twice.
